About

selection-of-yarn

Living Earth’s first Hats & Scarves project started in early December 2008, prompted by a bitter cold spell that caught lots of people without adequate warmth. In less than two months, we had received and distributed 250 beautiful, newly made hats and scarves, plus pairs of mittens and booties, a baby sweater, a shawl, and a small afghan.

Hats & Scarves offers a two-way benefit. Those engaged in yarn work have an opportunity to practice their gentle art and share their creative output, and those who need a little extra warmth receive something newly-made, warm, and wonderful.

Last year our only “drop off” site was New Seasons Markets’ Seven Corners store. Anonymous knitters left their carefully crafted items in our basket there—everything from sturdy bright goods to finely crafted work, from simple learner’s pieces to highly creative items. All were carefully and generously created for strangers the needle-workers will never meet.

Living Earth’s community partners for distribution included:

  • St. Andrew Church’s Harvest Share Program
  • Raphael House Women’s Shelter
  • Sisters of the Road

Based on last winter’s success, this year we will also distribute through the Virginia Garcia Health Clinic in Hillsboro, Portland Public Schools Clothes Closet, and the Emanuel Hospital neo-natal program.
